Fruit & Veg Flop

We're told, rightly, that a varied diet full of fruit and veg will benefit us greatly. But there's an issue with that... fruit and veg aren't as brilliant as they used to be.
A 2004 study by Donald Davis highlighted that the nutritional value of modern crops is up to 28% lower than in the 1950s.
Another landmark study, by Halweil in 2007, found reductions of up to 50% in nutrients like iron, zinc, calcium, selenium and vitamin C.
As a result, we need to eat far more fresh produce in order to attain the same goodness that would be present in a single serving 70 years ago.
Wilting Standards
Simply put: post World War 2, we needed more food. Science did its thing and total farm production nearly tripled between 1948 and 2017 (USDA, 2020).
With each new harvest, we take more from the earth. Modern varieties of produce take less time to grow and the lack of time means the food spends less time in the ground, therefore having less time to absorb the nutrients.
Modern farming practices focus on “deliver[ing] calories and cosmetic perfection but not necessarily nutrition.” Ergo, supplements are more useful than they've ever been.
